Just read your story on Mookie Betts. Great work! The only thing you left out was his days playing football. His mother wouldn’t let him play in high school, but I was fortunate enough to have coached him at 11 & 12. He was my quarterback and when I watch him now, nothing surprises me. Not his athleticism or his character. At 11, he looked like a small Johnny Manzel. We didn’t play him much on defense but if we needed a shutdown corner, we just plugged him in. His greatest asset is his intelligence. At 11, he was calling audibles based on defensive alignments and getting it right. In his first game for me, I called a play and he ran a different one and threw a touchdown. I was furious and asked him why he didn’t run the called play. He described the defense and he was right. I had forgotten about audibles since we only talked about it once. He was right. What I noted about him was he rarely made the same mistake twice. Best athlete I ever coached over 20 years.
