You Look Stunning

3 Jan

Been noticing something on Facebook recently that has me a bit confused: the way that girls comment on friends’ pictures.

What am I talking about?

Girls love Facebook. Let’s just get that out of the way. They love scrolling through their “news”feeds and looking at what other people are doing and wearing and then talking about it. I guess I shouldn’t be making fun. It’s not really that different than what I, and I’m certain many other people, do with Twitter. But I do like to believe that being addicted to Twitter does, at the least, have some educational advantage. Being addicted to information can’t be all that bad, can it?

I digress. This is supposed to be about what I’m now confused about, which is the compliments girls give each other on Facebook. “You look pretty,” no longer seems to mean you look pretty. Now, when a girl posts a picture of herself all dolled up at a wedding, it appears, at least to my Neanderthal-eye, that their friends are required to tell her that she looks “stunning. “Gorgeous” seems to work, too. “Pretty,” however, appears to be the new “cute,” which was always just a euphemism for “eh.”

My question: where does this end? Is the bar going to keep moving? Are there any words more complementary than “stunning” and “gorgeous.” God, I hope not.

And yes, this is the stuff I think about.
